We live in a world wrought with visual stimulation. Whether it be in neon, on billboards, thrusting itself at us from the front page of a magazine or newspaper, or droning in a constant stream from a television set positioned in the corner of a living room, visual images have become more and more explicit, provocative, powerful, and often overwhelming.
These are the characteristics of our times, characteristics that are exploited by contemporary artists, characteristics to which I am not immune. In general though, I find that my work is a counterpoint to political and narrative art and to the rancor of this decade. My paintings are simple interpretations of what I feel we should all try to celebrate, namely Beauty and Truth. My goal is to create works that are compositionally balanced, and that are sensitive to the infinite variability of light. For me a successful painting is very similar to a successful poem. In poetry the economy of language produces an evocative imagery. In painting a bold brush stroke can suggest a world of subtleties.
